52 Couples Caught In Malaysia Hotel Raids Face Jail

"Fifty-two unmarried Muslim couples face charges of sexual misconduct and possible jail terms after being caught alone in hotel rooms by Malaysia's Islamic morality police during a New Year's Day crackdown, an official said Monday.

Scores of officers fanned out across budget hotels in central Selangor state before dawn on Jan. 1, knocking on doors and detaining unmarried Muslim couples who were sharing rooms, said Hidayat Abdul Rani, a spokesman for the Selangor Islamic Department.

The detained, mostly students and young factory workers, are expected to be charged with "khalwat," or "close proximity," which under Malaysia's Islamic Shariah law is described as couples not married to each other being alone together in a private place.

"We chose to have this large-scale operation on New Year's Day because many people are known to commit this offense while celebrating such a major holiday," Hidayat said.

In Selangor, khalwat carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a fine.

The Shariah laws apply only to Malaysia's Muslims, who make up nearly two-thirds of the population, and not to the Christian, Buddhist and Hindu minorities."

A line too far for Lidl as 100kg of cocaine turns up in banana boxes

"It is famous for its budget offers and rock-bottom prices but when the Lidl supermarket chain received several batches of high-grade cocaine at its Spanish stores last weekend it decided that that was one product which would not be making it on to the shelves.

Instead the budget supermarket group called in the police to solve the mystery of how a dozen of its stores had each received hundreds of thousands of euros worth of neatly wrapped cocaine mixed in with their fresh bananas.

The drugs were discovered at the bottom of banana boxes that went to stores in Madrid, Plasencia and the town of Cáceres. The bananas, which had been imported by sea from Ecuador, arrived at the Mercamadrid wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Madrid last week. There they were snapped up by buyers from Lidl and the Alcampo supermarket group.

It was not until a Lidl employee at a Madrid supermarket got ready to stack the bananas on the store's shelves that the curious packages lying under the bunches were discovered.

Similar cargoes of cocaine were later found at a dozen Lidl supermarkets, with more than 100kg (220lb) of the drug being discovered overall. The hunt for further batches was continuing yesterday. Police said the traffickers had somehow failed to pick up their cocaine, which had a street value of about €4.5m (£4.02m).

"They must have been afraid that we were on to them," Eloy Quiros, head of the Spanish police's organised crime unit, said today. He added that police were liaising with their Ecuadorean counterparts to find out exactly where the bananas had been packed.

In some cases the bananas had been peeled, with only the skin left behind, presumably so that the cocaine would not increase the weight of each 15kg box.

A Lidl spokesman said that the cocaine had not contaminated the bananas but that the fruit had, in any case, not been put on sale.

Police said Lidl had nothing to do with the smuggling operation and thanked the supermarket chain for its help in tracking down the cargo."

Some Countries Really Know How To Please Their People . . . . .

Finland: Broadband Is a Legal Right

"Come July 2010, every Fin will have access to a 1 Megabit-per-second broadband connection. Finland just became the first country in the world to sign a law that provides every citizen of the country with a legal right to a broadband connection.

The Finnish government had already announced that every citizen should have access to a 100 Megabit-per-second broadband connection by the end of 2015. Now, it took an intermediary step toward that goal. On Oct. 14, the Ministry of Transport and Communications announced that every Fin should have a legal right to a 1 Megabit-per-second connection by next summer.

The move could pave the way for other countries to start looking at broadband as its citizens’ inalienable legal right, akin to freedom of speech and freedom of movement. That makes a lot of sense: Most of us can no longer perform our work duties, do homework or communicate with friends without having access to the Internet. Many Web-based communications and video services, such as Skype, require a broadband connection to work. People need broadband connections to live normal lives, as Finland is the first nation to acknowledge."

LEGO Star Wars Millenium Falcon

"The Lego Millennium Falcon is nearly 3 feet long; it costs $499 and it is made of over 5,000 pieces! Look at pictures of it on the Internet at your leisure. The Millennium Falcon has been listed as the biggest Lego set ever sold. There are other perks you can get from it: it comes with its own mini-figures (Chewbacca, C3PO, Snowtrooper, Han Solo, Princess Leia); you can open the triangular plats on the top of the ship to see inside; and even pull out the starboard hatch lid and lower the boarding ramp, thus allowing your favourite Star Wars members to get on board!"

BeautifulPeople.com axes holiday weight gain members

Dating and social network site BeautifulPeople.com has axed some 5,000 members following complaints that they had gained weight.

"The members were singled out after posting pictures of themselves that reportedly showed they had put on pounds over the holiday period.

The site allows entry to new members only if existing members vote them as sufficiently attractive to warrant it.

The US, the UK, and Canada topped the list of excluded members.

The site has always been unrepentant about its selection process, calling itself "the largest network of attractive people in the world".

The move was reportedly prompted by members themselves, who police the membership of the site to maintain a high - if highly subjective - standard of attractiveness.

"As a business, we mourn the loss of any member, but the fact remains that our members demand the high standard of beauty be upheld," said site founder Robert Hintze.

"Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded."
